Helba

"A friend? Or perhaps a foe?...A meddler with a warning."

Helba is definitely a dream costume come to life! I used to play the games and watch the show when I was in middle school, and from teh moment I saw her, I fell in love with Helba. She is strong, mysterious, cunning, and whitty. And has an AMAZING design as well! Before I even fully understood what coslay was, I knew I wanted to someday cosplay as Helba. I thought that day would never come. At the time, I couldn't picture myself ever being skilled enough to create such an elaborte costume, but after some time and many years of practive. I knew I was ready.

I debuted this costume at Katsucon 2014. I have yet to complete her staff, but once I do (or more then likely have it comissioned) you can bet your booty I'll be wearing Helba again!

Construction Notes

Hat: Made from white gabardine. I used a really stiff interfacing to create the hat and then I covered it with the gabardine.  The arm pieces on either side of the hat are made from lampshade interfacing that I adhered the gabardine to via ironing. The silver studs on the arms are painted googly eyes. The mask portion was made of craft foam and painted gold. The portion of the visor is a red, semi-transparent folder I had that I cut to fit the back of the mask (http://instagram.com/p/i-pSSwtBkD/#). The gem in the center of the mask is a glass cabochon that I backed with red to change the color. The symbol on her hat is cut black satin that I  heat-n-bonded onto the hat. Wig: just a wig I found on ebay that was the right color and length. I only had to do some trimming on the locks in the front to better match Helba's.

Necklace: Black vinyl that attaches with velcro in the back. The gold portion of the costume is craft foam painted gold and glued to the vinyl. The beads are on an I-pin that I hand stitched to the vinyl bit of the collar so that way they could have a bit of movement and not sit stiffly on my neck (instagram.com/p/iS1JO1tBt0/#).

Jacket: I used a bolero jacket pattern for the body of the jacket and a basic sleeve pattern for the sleeves. For the sleeves, I altered the seams so that I had two seams on the sides of my arms instead of just one seam down the back. This was so I could alter the shape of the sleeve at the base into the more circular shape you see (instagram.com/p/fGxWAmtBoT/#). The circle shape of the sleeve was sealed with a piece that my fingers would pass through. I made the holes for my fingers my simply making buttonholes (instagram.com/p/ih_rdqtBvW/#). The sleeves are stuffed with batting to better hold their shape. The gold portion of the sleeve is gold vinyl I had leftover from another costume and I simply reused for Helba and attached to the sleeve at the seams. The design on her sleeve was free handed with sharpie and was based off the designs on her concept art. The body of the jacket is lined with red velvet and the blue is upholstery velvet. I got very lucky with this fabric, it had the blue lines in it already and I didn't have to paint or add to it in any way to get that pattern. In order to make the jacket, I used Butterick 5232 (view A). That view has a plain jacket body and good base for that crazy collar of hers. I took that collar pattern and adjusted it slightly to look more square and to be a bit larger (instagram.com/p/isMIu8NBgO/#).

Once I had the mock up of the collar (now more square and a bit larger) and a mock up made for the bolero jacket (fitted to my bust better and I lengthened the back a tad) I sewed the mock up all together. Then, I cut out the perimeter of the jacket/collar mock up to create a pattern peice for the blue trim that goes all the way around the inside of her jacket. Then, I took those cut up pattern pieces, cut out my fabric and made my jacket! I covered the seams where the blue meets the red with gold ribbon (instagram.com/p/isMIu8NBgO/#) and purple satin triangles were heat-n-bonded on the outside of the jacket (instagram.com/p/isCjy_tBha/#).

Shoulder pieces: These guys gave me quite a bit of trouble, but I'm quite happy with how they turned out. I created the shape using foam spheres and glued a foam cone to the end of them to make a basic shape. I used a dremmel tool to carve away at the sphere so that my shoulder could fit the shape. I then covered the foam with layers of batting to beef them up a bit and all that got covered with the white gabardine. I then used black vinyl to make the black stripe and triangle markings going around the sides of the shoulder things. I attached them to the jacket by simply hand stitching them onto the sleeve (I'm VERY shocked that was enough support for them to sit correctly on my shoulders) (instagram.com/p/kJIoWPtBqi/#). The red gems on the black diamond shapes are just red aquarium stones glued to the vinyl. (better view of the finished shoulder things instagram.com/p/kcsR6StBoF/#).

Finally, the black arm bands were just strips of vinyl I hemmed and attached to the sleeve with velcro. The silver studs are painted googly eyes glued to the black strips.

Bra: I bought a strapless bra from Wal-Mart and covered it with white gabardine. I added the purple pokeball shapes using satin and heat-n-bond. The straps are just sewn tubes attached to the bra and the triangle bit is just a hemmed triangle I stuck onto the center of the bra (instagram.com/p/kQu2mpNBkx/#).

Skirt: The black portion of the skirt is black vinyl that is cut into a "v" type shape that could fit around my waist and attaches in the back with velcro. (instagram.com/p/i5ZPKnNBkq/#). The body of the skirt is sewn with the white gabardine and has purple satin triangle attached at the base (instagram.com/p/g9zI-oNBoX/#). I attached the triangle shapes by zig-zag stitching them in place, they were also interfaced so that they would keep their shape better. The gold trim is the same ribbon I used on the jacket, I cut each individual triangle side and steam-a-seamed them down onto the skirt. Here you can see I tried to make it one continuous piece, but the corners were not as sharp (instagram.com/p/i7iZz7NBgx/). When I cut each individual side, the points of each triangle came out much cleaner (instagram.com/p/i72mQ2NBo8/#). The front flap of the skirt is just safety pinned onto the top of the skirt (because I'm lazy to sew like snaps or velcro onto it). It is stuffed with the same stiff interfacing as the body of the hat and the purple patterns are heat-n-bonded onto the flap. The tassel I just bought and attached to the point of the flap (instagram.com/p/i72mQ2NBo8/#). The little butt cape thing simply attaches to the black belt via snaps and the purple triangles are also heat-n-bonded on (instagram.com/p/jstaNWtBg1/#).

I also wore a wedding dress petticoat I found at the thrift store with this costume to help the skirt keep its shape better.
